Safety

Both the Supra and 4 Series Coupe offer rear cross-traffic warning, but the Supra Auto has Parking Support Brake (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The 4 Series Coupe’s Cross Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Supra and the 4 Series Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available blind spot warning systems and rear parking sensors.

Warranty

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Supra 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW covers the 4 Series Coupe. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the 4 Series Coupe ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Supra’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in long-term dependability. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, BMW is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota first in overall reliability. BMW is ranked third.

Engine

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Supra has larger tires than the 4 Series Coupe (F:255/35R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. 225/45R18). The Supra 3.0’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 4 Series Coupe (F:255/35R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. F:225/40R19 & R:255/35R19).

The Supra 2.0’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 4 Series Coupe’s standard 45 series tires. The Supra 3.0’s tires have a lower 35 series profile than the 4 Series Coupe’s optional 40 series front tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Supra 3.0 Premium handles at 1.07 G’s, while the M440i xDrive Coupe pulls only .91 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Supra 3.0 Premium executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the M440i xDrive Coupe (23.7 seconds @ .82 average G’s vs. 24.7 seconds @ .78 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Supra’s turning circle is 3.3 feet tighter than the 4 Series Coupe’s (34.1 feet vs. 37.4 feet). The Supra’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the 4 Series Coupe xDrive’s (34.1 feet vs. 39.4 feet).

Chassis

The Toyota Supra may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 600 pounds less than the BMW 4 Series Coupe.

The Supra is 1 foot, 3.4 inches shorter than the 430i, making the Supra easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Supra has .3 inches more front headroom and .4 inches more front legroom than the 4 Series Coupe.

Recommendations
