Compare the2024 Toyota TundraVS 2024 Rivian R1T

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Tundra are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The R1T doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Tundra has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The R1T doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Tundra has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The R1T doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Tundra (except SR) offers an optional Parking Support Brake that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The R1T doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the Tundra and R1T offer rear cross-traffic warning, but the Tundra with Rear Cross Traffic Alert also has Parking Support Brake (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The R1T’s Rear Cross-Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Tundra and the R1T have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Tundra for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Rivian doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the R1T.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Rivian vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in overall reliability. Rivian is ranked 28th.

For better stopping power the Tundra’s brake rotors are larger than those on the R1T:

For better traction, the Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the R1T (285/65R18 vs. 275/55R21).

The Toyota Tundra’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Rivian R1T only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Tundra has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your work or a trip. A full size spare costs extra on the R1T. Without the option you must depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Tundra 6.5-foot bed Extended Cab Pickup’s wheelbase is 9.9 inches longer than on the R1T (145.7 inches vs. 135.8 inches). The Tundra 8.1-foot bed Extended Cab Pickup’s wheelbase is 28.8 inches longer than on the R1T (164.6 inches vs. 135.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Tundra is 1.2 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the R1T.

The Toyota Tundra may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 1800 pounds less than the Rivian R1T.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Tundra has standard flush composite headlights. The R1T has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup is quieter than the R1T (32 vs. 41 dB).

The Tundra’s cargo box is larger than the R1T’s in almost every dimension:

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Tundra. The R1T doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Toyota Tundra offers an optional Bed Step, which folds out and allows for much easier access to the cargo area. The Rivian R1T doesn’t offer a rear cargo step.

Maximum trailer towing in the Rivian R1T is limited to 11000 pounds. The Tundra Extended Cab Pickup offers up to a 12000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Tundra Crew Cab Pickup 4x4 has a higher standard payload capacity than the R1T (1820 vs. 1764 lbs.).

The Tundra has a higher maximum payload capacity than the R1T (1940 vs. 1764 lbs.).

The Tundra (except SR/SR5/Limited/TRD Pro) offers an available heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The R1T doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Consumer Reports rated the Tundra’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the R1T’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

The Tundra’s standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. The R1T doesn’t even offer side window demisters, so the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Tundra to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The R1T doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Tundra with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The R1T’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Tundra Limited/Platinum/1794/TRD Pro/Capstone has standard front air conditioned seats and the Tundra Platinum/1794/Capstone also has them in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The R1T doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Toyota Tundra comes in extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the Rivian R1T isn’t available as an extended cab.

The Tundra is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The R1T doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Toyota Tundra outsold the Rivian R1S/R1T by almost three to one during 2023.
