Both the Supra and 8 Series offer rear cross-traffic warning, but the Supra Auto has Parking Support Brake (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The 8 Series’ Cross Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Supra and the 8 Series have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available blind spot warning systems and rear parking sensors.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Supra 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW covers the 8 Series. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the 8 Series ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Supra’s warranty.

The Supra’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 47 more horsepower (382 vs. 335) than the 840i’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Supra higher (4 to 6 out of 10) than the BMW 8 Series (3). This means the Supra produces up to 23.4 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the 8 Series every 15,000 miles.

The Supra offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and sportiness. The 8 Series doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

For better traction, the Supra has larger front tires than the 8 Series (F:255/35R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. F:245/35R20 & R:275/30R20).

The Supra’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 8 Series’ standard 40 series front tires.

The Toyota Supra may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 1300 pounds less than the BMW 8 Series.

The Supra is 1 foot, 6.7 inches shorter than the 8 Series, making the Supra easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Insurance will cost less for the Supra owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Supra will cost $2290 to $9040 less than the 8 Series over a five-year period.

The Supra will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Supra will retain 53.89% to 67.06% of its original price after five years, while the 8 Series only retains 42.63% to 42.96%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Toyota Supra will be $52069 to $56502 less than for the BMW 8 Series.
