The Land Cruiser’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The GX doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Land Cruiser are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Lexus GX doesn’t offer height-adjustable rear seat belts.

Both the Land Cruiser and the GX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Warranty

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Land Cruiser for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the GX (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 5 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Land Cruiser’s warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Land Cruiser gets better fuel mileage than the GX (22 city/25 hwy vs. 15 city/21 hwy).

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Land Cruiser’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. The GX doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Land Cruiser uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GX requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Chassis

The Toyota Land Cruiser may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 pounds less than the Lexus GX.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Land Cruiser is quieter than the GX Overtrail+:

The Land Cruiser has a much larger cargo volume than the GX with its rear seat up (37.5 vs. 10.3 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Land Cruiser has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the GX.
