The Toyota Camry has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The S60 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

Both the Camry and the S60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Toyota Camry has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2024 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The S60 has not yet been fully evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Camry 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the S60. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the S60 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Camry’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Camry first among midsize cars in their 2024 Initial Quality Study. The S60 isn’t in the top three in its category.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in overall reliability. Volvo is ranked 25th.

On the EPA test cycle the Camry gets better mileage than the S60 running its gasoline engine:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Camry uses regular unleaded gasoline. The S60 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The Camry has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The S60 doesn’t offer a CVT.

The front and rear suspension of the Camry uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S60, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

The Toyota Camry may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 800 pounds less than the Volvo S60.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Camry XSE AWD is quieter than the S60 Core (73 vs. 75 dB).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Camry a Mid-size car, while the S60 is rated a Compact.

The Camry has 3.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S60 (99.9 vs. 96).

The Camry has .9 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom, 2.8 inches more rear legroom, 1.2 inches more rear hip room and 1.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the S60.

The Camry has a much larger trunk than the S60 (15.1 vs. 11.6 cubic feet).

The Camry XLE’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S60 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Camry has standard extendable sun visors. The S60 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota Camry has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the S60.

The Toyota Camry outsold the Volvo 60 Series by almost 24 to one during 2023.
