The Toyota Highlander’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the BMW X7 does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

There are almost 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Highlander’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 27 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 9th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. BMW is ranked 8th.

On the EPA test cycle the Highlander gets better mileage than the X7:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Highlander uses regular unleaded gasoline. The X7 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Highlander higher (6 out of 10) than the BMW X7 (4 to 6). This means the Highlander produces up to 12.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the X7 every 15,000 miles.

For better maneuverability, the Highlander’s turning circle is 3.3 feet tighter than the X7 w/Rear Steering’s (37.4 feet vs. 40.7 feet). The Highlander’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the X7 xDrive40i’s (37.4 feet vs. 42.7 feet).

The Toyota Highlander may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1100 to 1550 pounds less than the BMW X7.

The Highlander offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the X7 can only carry 7.
